The Library has been growing in leaps and bounds since it opened in May, but has become somewhat disorganized.  As time allows the contents will be organized into a more logical structure, and appropriate categories will be added to make grouping and searching easier.  Please bear with us as we move forward, and as always, keep sending in your comments and suggestions.

Every effort will be made to publish documents in their original format, however, in the interests of keeping download times to a minimum, most will have been reduced in quality from the original images.  If you would like a copy of the original higher quality image click here to send a email with your request.

The Bemrose Internet Library

Welcome to the Bemrose Internet Library where you can browse old newspaper articles about the school, teachers, and students, revisit old school documents, letters, and anything else we are fortunate enough to be able to include.  It is hoped that we will be able to include audio visual materials as they become available and as time allows for inclusion.  Please check back often to see what has been added.  As always, your comments, requests, and contributions are strongly encouraged.

Below is the first of what is hoped will be all scenes from the film made at Bemrose in the 1950's.  These files are formatted to use Microsoft's Media Player.  If you encounter any problems, experience unacceptably long download times, or have comments about the clip please click here to send an email with your feedback.  The more feedback we receive  the better, as work on converting the entire film will begin shortly.  Please help us to get it right the first time.

It Was Different In My Day Schools have changed since Frank Grimshaw first entered Bemrose Grammar School’s Preparatory Form back in 1937. Inkpots, grey flannel short pants, and ration books were accepted as part of everyday life.  Back then, grammar schools were all single sex, and all were fee paying.

Frank has generously allowed us to reproduce part of his book, “It Was Different In My Day”, in which Frank recounts life at Bemrose during World War II.

The School Prospectus ~ 1933
Read the Bemrose School Prospectus written in 1933.  Please note that some of the pages in this section are large downloads especially if you are connected through a dial up connection.  This was necessary so that the text in the original scans of the Prospectus can still be legible.

Memories of Derby Municipal Secondary School

"I believe that it was during my attendance that the school caps were introduced, blue caps with D.M.S.S. interwoven in gold silk as the school badge, and we youngsters were very proud to wear it."

A letter sent by Mr. Alfred Grundy in 1954 to Mr. Bennett, Headmaster of Bemrose School, reveals memories of the original Derby Municipal Secondary School in Abbey Street.
