at the Bemrose School Hobbies Exhibition 1967/68

"This is a photo that originally appeared in the Derby Evening Telegraph
of the Amateur Radio Society's stand at the Bemrose School Hobbies
Exhibition. I'm not exactly sure of the date, but it must be around 1967/68.

I'm the one in the trendy needlecord shirt operating the equipment. Most
of the faces in the photo are familiar to me, but putting names to them
is another matter ... I'm pretty sure that the guy with the grin in the
top left hand corner is John Barker. The one with the school tie and
cord jacket looking over my shoulder is Calvert. Next to him in the tie
and white shirt is Bamford. C P Redfern, who went on to fame as Head
Boy, is in the top right corner a few feet away from the only person
ever to get away with lighting up in the school hall! I think the young
lad in the school blazer in the foreground is Geoff Crocker's younger brother.

The location is the school hall with the equipment spread out on tables
immediately in front of the stage.

For the technically minded, I'm operating an ex-Lancaster bomber R1155
receiver. At the front is a two-meter AM transmitter strip from a Pye
radiotelephone. Behind that is the modulator with an enormous Woden
modulation transformer supporting the power meter. Some of the exposed
wiring had getting on for 1000 volts on it, a fact considerately kept
from the staff at the time in order not to worry them ..."
